Courtyard Renovation with Flagstone & Native Plants

When a homeowner in our community reached out about their overgrown courtyard, they were ready for a complete transformation. What was once a tight, hard-to-maintain garden filled with oversized shrubs, dying cherry trees, and patchy grass needed new life. They wanted a space that not only looked beautiful but also highlighted the architecture of their home.

After a thoughtful design consultation, our team created a plan that focused on sustainability, function, and year-round beauty. The results earned a 5-star review on Angi—and most importantly, a courtyard the homeowners can enjoy every day.

Surpassed Expectations

Courtyard renovation with flagstone path and native shrubs

The Challenge: A Garden Out of Balance

The original courtyard had become crowded with declining trees and overgrown hedges. The large plantings made the space feel dark and claustrophobic, while the thin grass required constant maintenance but offered little beauty. Walking through the small area had become more of a chore than a joy.

The Solution: Sustainable Design with Native Plants

Our team removed the aging cherry trees and oversized shrubs, opening up the courtyard to light and airflow. Instead of grass that struggled to survive, we installed a flagstone walkway and a comfortable sitting area—durable, low-maintenance features that extend outdoor living space.

To bring color and texture, we selected small flowering shrubs, ferns, perennials, and evergreen groundcovers. These plantings create seasonal interest while keeping the courtyard feeling airy and welcoming. As a focal point, we planted serviceberry trees (also known as juneberry), a native tree known for its multi-season appeal—delicate spring blossoms, summer berries, brilliant fall foliage, and graceful winter form.

The Result: An Inviting Outdoor Retreat

What was once a muddy, overgrown garden is now a sustainable courtyard that balances beauty with function. The homeowners can stroll along the flagstone path, relax in the new sitting area, and enjoy the vibrant textures and colors that change with the seasons. The design also reduces long-term maintenance, making it a smart investment as well as an aesthetic one.

The homeowner summed it up best in their 5-star Angi review:
“Stuart did an amazing job in the design and execution of renovating our courtyard. He took it from overgrown hedges and trees to a sustainable living space that shows off the architecture of our house. The crew was great, and the work surpassed our expectations!”
